At the end of Core Differences, we decided to have a free-for-all fight between all four of us. But given our limited time and the cold weather, we just winged it in one big take. It was quite fun and we think turned out rather amusing. We hope you TFN folks in particular might enjoy it.

    I remember watching the old version as a teen! Man, that looked really good. Really, some of the most lifelike effects achieved for non-glowing props. I love the prequels, but this does look kinda better than those films. It's a shame Disney won't let some actors fight with carbon fiber SOMETIMES. As for the saber core debate, at this point I'd say the true answer is that the softness of the white core should match how soft other REAL overexposed light sources bloom through the camera/lens combo used. If a lightsaber was real, it would simply be a glowing, colored stick... it would be the overexposure in-camera that would create the signature white core and colored glow. That's my take, anyway. Different camera systems and processing pipelines render highlight rolloff differently, and THAT is where you get your answer to how soft the saber core should be... in any given film, anyway. EDIT: Of course, you can interpret the saber blade itself as having different levels of "softness" as a real physical thing, but the way it looks in-camera should arguably still match how an equivalent light source would look overexposed in-camera, to appear most lifelike. Some cameras would add quite a sharp transition from core to glow, even if the real saber blade was "soft" irl. I spent a couple years toying with getting a 100% in-camera lightsaber effect using glowing props, and it ended up requiring a lot of selective lens filtration and exposure techniques, along with global shutter from the RED Komodo. I did have to add the clashes in post, but the glow was in-camera. There's a short on my channel if such a thing makes you curious

    • @NateCow
      @NateCow 3 месяца назад

      Well said! I agree on all that! And thank you, achieving all this on carbon fiber blades was certainly interesting, considering Sisters' Quarrel used polycarbonate so the blades were already white, so I couldn't simply use the exact setups from that. And yeah, regardless of how the camera would've photographed these, we chose to go a slightly different route on the remaster: making my saber more like modern sequel trilogy sabers, and making Vapes' saber more like the optical days of Empire. Even went so far as to only add extra cast light off of my saber, which Vapes thought was hilarious.

    • @ConnerMainChannel
      @ConnerMainChannel 3 месяца назад

      @@NateCow Yeah it looks REALLY good for carbon fiber + roto. I think the thing about lightsabers is, they have too many characteristics to be simulated perfectly. There is no perfect prop, and even the choreography is just to give an impression of how psychic space wizards might fight with a weightless, omni directional magic sword. Its all impressionistic, you can’t film a real lightsaber duel. So every film needs to decide what props and effects best suit the needs of the scene, to represent the most important elements of a “lightsaber fight”. These VFX here really show that lightweight stunt blades should probably be given more of a shot whenever real glowing props aren’t going to have a more powerful effect on the final fight…

    The effects were very nice. Good job on those. The intensity in the girls' faces was also good so props to them on the acting. The choreo didn't hold up though. Both sisters seemed to fight the same, and there didn't look to be a "killing intent" behind any strikes. They lacked speed and power imo. Overall, this was decent especially considering how rusty you are!
